A real life story from: Blair Drummond
Reflections from international volunteers about their experience of volunteering at Camphill Blair Drummond:
Since I have been volunteering at Camphill Blair Drummond in Scotland, I have met so many nice people here already and I feel really lucky to call some of them my good friends with which I share a lot of happy memories.
In Camphill Blair Drummond I learned to really appreciate all the small joyful moments in life and that’s something I want to continue, no matter in which job I will end up. What makes me the happiest in Camphill Blair Drummond are the residents. As soon as one of them is laughing, even without any obvious reasons, I just have to join in.
I always knew Scotland has a very beautiful landscape, but I was still surprised when I came here, because even on a short walk around Camphill Blair Drummond you’ll find astonishing sights. Having a double room in a castle will forever be one of my most exciting ways to live.
I’m so grateful every time I see this beautiful old building and having a roommate and all the other international volunteers around you really helps with being away from home.

I was able to find really good friends at Camphill, when volunteering, because you’re living together and you share the same life. I have learned a lot, about helping people with disabilities, organising myself, being creative and dealing with problems.
I questioned the idea of having a straight-forward career path, and realised that happiness should be a bigger goal – Camphill has given me amazing experiences, and taught me to enjoy the little moments more.
At Camphill, you are surrounded by people all the time, which makes me extremely happy, (especially during the Lockdown).
You feel a good sense of belonging. It makes me smile when I am having happy or funny moments with the residents – I enjoy helping to plan activities and to see how this can influence the life of others in a positive way.

The friendships I made in Camphill will surely last me a lifetime. Especially during Coronavirus times, we have all grown together so fast and close. Sometimes I feel like I have known the people for years.
I would say that volunteering at Camphill Blair Drummond .. has definitely given me a lot to think about for future careers. The people have taught me so much about friendship and love, and have definitely challenged my patience more times then I can count. It feels so nice to be helpful in a place where it’s really needed!!
The positive side for me is the feeling of family or just community itself. You are constantly surrounded by so many lovely people no matter if it’s the residents, volunteers or staff. Everyone is supporting each other, which makes Camphill such a friendly, homely and magical place.
Scotland is definitely more for people who like to be outside, but if you do, then it’s amazing. Camphill is surrounded by so many beautiful hills and lochs and although I haven’t seen a lot yet due to Covid restrictions. I do really love the country. The grass is definitely greener over here.
The rooms are all completely different, but all amazing. Almost every room has an old fireplace, and many have a little tower room. Living together with so many like-minded people is so much fun and it never gets boring.
